CUSTOM DESIGNED MENTORING PROGRAMS
Mentoring is the act of helping someone learn
The benefits of formal mentoring programs in organizations are clear:
- Targeted leadership development and retention of valued talent
- More diversity at all levels
- A more inclusive work environment
- A way to practice organizational values
- Expanded internal networks and connections
- Sustained knowledge and wisdom up, down and around the organization
Strategically designed and thoughtfully implemented mentoring programs provide significant benefits that pay big dividends in terms of staff/member development, productivity, engagement and culture change.
FORMAL MENTORING SUCCESS
Enacting a successful mentoring program requires critical forethought and implementation planning. In my 20 years researching, designing and implementing formal mentoring programs, the following criteria have emerged as the determinants for program success.
Program Success Criteria
- Clear program goals and measurable outcomes
- Process for recruiting and matching participants including participant readiness self evaluation
- Commonly understood context and expectations
- Training to establish and support partnerships
- Framework for partnership agreements and identifying learning goals.
While common in larger businesses, formal mentoring programs provide value in all types and sizes of community groups, industry organizations and sports clubs. In the right context with the right structure and participant preparation, formal mentoring programs can be instrumental in connecting mentors and mentees in a wide variety of situations for individual learning and growth as well as overall organizational development.
Throughout my corporate career, athletic pursuits, personal endeavours and in growing my business, I have had a variety of mentors who have been instrumental in my learning and resulting accomplishments.
CUSTOM DESIGNED MENTORING PROGRAMS
For virtual or in-person implementation
While many core elements of mentoring programs are the same, every organization and application has unique needs. To simplify the implementation and allow for easy customization as well as make the best use of participants’ time, I’ve designed a series of on-line learning modules that serve as pre-work for both mentees and mentors. The follow-on orientation session is like a facilitated first meeting for the mentoring partners where they get to know each other, establish learning goals and decide how they want to work together. The orientation can be facilitated virtually or in-person.
